MyVillage offers a new option for local families. By Erica Mackey, CEO and Co-Founder, MyVillage

For me, the struggle to find affordable, high quality childcare is personal. When I became a mom for the first time in 2016, I had no idea that I should have had my daughter on a waiting list while still in utero. I’ll never forget the guilt and panic I felt as I tried to navigate finding a high quality childcare setting where my daughter would be well cared for while I worked.

Common Struggle

My experience is not unusual here in Colorado Springs.

Our common struggle to find high quality, affordable infant and toddler care is what led my co-founder and me to start MyVillage. MyVillage already has two high-quality programs in Colorado Springs. Many more are on track to open later this summer. It’s exciting to see how fast our MyVillage community of in-home educators is growing across this wonderful Colorado community.

Nina Poythress, Owner and Head Educator of Nina’s Little Wonders in SE Colorado Springs (an infant and toddler spot open)

Nina Poythress is one of our new educators in southeast Colorado Springs. She is a proud mother of six with 15 years’ childcare experience in the local area before starting her own in-home childcare program with MyVillage.

Robbin Hutchins-Jones, a MyVillage Lead Mentor, ran her own in-home childcare program in Aurora, Colorado, for 17 years. Now, she supports MyVillage Mentors and Educators across Colorado. “I help our MyVillage Educators with the aspects of running a childcare business that initially can be intimidating, so that they can focus on what they’re most passionate about—delivering the highest quality care for the kids.”

MyVillage Roots

As a serial entrepreneur with a passion for helping more women start their own businesses, I co-founded MyVillage with Beth Szymanski (based in Boulder, CO) in 2017. We exist to help women like Nina turn their passion for kids into a rewarding career. One that offers flexibility, more time with their own families and the ability to be their own boss.

Nina’s Little Wonders and Montessori Prep are two women-owned, high-quality MyVillage programs in Colorado Springs. Like the others in our MyVillage community, these women appreciate the flexibility that owning and running their own in-home childcare business provides, including being able to care for their own families while still having a meaningful career where they can earn up to $66,000 a year.

This matters because the current childcare system isn’t working for anyone. Childcare providers make notoriously low wages for a really, really important job. And available infant and toddler childcare options are largely unaffordable for regular working families.

Childcare is More Expensive than College

The Early Milestones Colorado study by the University of Denver and Brodsky Research and Consulting found that the cost of high quality care is prohibitive for many Colorado families. One year of center-based care for an infant or toddler costs 44% more than one year of public college tuition in Colorado.

Today I’m proud to say that MyVillage already has more than 30 programs across Colorado and Montana. And we are growing quickly—especially in Colorado Springs. Watch this video to learn the story behind MyVillage and what makes our community of in-home Educators so exceptional.
