Captain’s Log: Conversations with a Four Year Old

2

Out of the mouth’s of babes or kids say the darnedest things… however you want to caption it- having young children in the house who are just learning to use their words and articulate themselves can result in some pretty awesome and hilarious conversations. Everyone keeps telling me how much I am going to miss this phase of my life and that I need to write what they say down so I can look back on it and show it to them later.  Unfortunately though, when I look at their baby books, I realize that I do as good of a job of chronicling their lives as I do my own. I am pretty sure I have 20 journals in my possession that are all the same- two pages meticulously filled out with every minute detail followed by a book of blank space. Anne Frank I am not.

I thought about what I could do to keep track of their precious, cognitive gems and decided that even though I am terrible at writing it down and keeping track of journals, evidently I am excellent at updating Facebook.  There it began; I turned one of my worst vices in to my online journal via screen shots. Now, I record their comments on the fly using a notes app on my phone, then I post them on my Facebook page as a photo to an album that I sarcastically refer to as my “Captain’s Log”.

I was so excited when I realized that by uploading their thoughts and comments this way, I can easily send the entire album to be printed as a book!  When they are older, I will forever bind (with photos if I choose) their words in a precious keepsake. Efficient and fun all in one!

Rachel, Senior Writer
Rachel is a native Coloradoan, though originally from the Western Slope. She followed her husband Chris to his hometown of Colorado Springs after having met in engineering school at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. Together they have four beautiful children, Tommy (2011), Tazzy (2014), Zach (2015) and Zinny (2018). Having a young and active family keeps Rachel on her toes trying to find ways to keep the ship sailing while still meeting all the demands of motherhood. Though Rachel loves her most important role as Mommy most, she also works full time outside the home as a Water Resources Engineer for the Colorado Division of Water Resources. This role helps keep her life centered, bouncing from detailed and complex discussions relating to Colorado Water Law with her husband ( a mechanical engineer) to daycare and preschool drop off and pick up schedules, while being constantly interrupted by the equally complex musings of her 4 year.

  1. These are great Rachel! 🙂 A few years ago I was really good at writing down funny quotes, recently found them and the kids and I laughed so hard. Started trying to remember to write them down on my phone at least to save them for down the road. Love your idea of including them in an album down the road.
