Tackling My Laundry

Six Laundry Hacks To Improve Your Day

Do you have a love/hate relationship with laundry? I know my relationship with it is definitely on-again-off-again. Sometimes I can tackle it like no ones business and sometimes it leaves me buried and feeling defeated. I just can’t seem to keep a steady relationship with it whether it be keeping up with the piles, keeping my laundry room clean, or just keeping the machines clean. I have decided to compile a list of surefire tactics to help me tackle this problem and keep my laundry relationship fresh. Or at least help with a few of the problems that I encounter on a daily basis.

1. Did you accidentally throw your toddlers new red sock in with you load of whites? Are you feeling defeated and are seeing a light shade of red? Well don’t fret, I have a little concoction that will hopefully get them white again. Soak the clothes in baking soda, warm water, ½ cup salt, and a ½ cup detergent for about an hour and then wash as usual. This must be done before they are put in the dryer and is best if they are still damp.

2. Did you leave a load of clothes in the washer for a little too long and now it smells a little sour? It is definitely frustrating but can be fixed very easily. What you are smelling is mildew and you will need to eliminate it to get rid of the smell. To do this simply wash your clothes with a cup of white vinegar. This will kill the mildew. You will want to wash them on the hottest cycle possible and then follow up with another cycle with a cup of baking soda. Your clothes should be fresh and mildew free after this. This is also a great way to freshen up towels. You can also add a couple drops of lavender essential oils at the beginning of the wash, as it has anti-mold properties.

3. Do you have few teenage boys in the house with stinky gym clothes? Well I have just the thing for you! A cup of mouthwash in the washing machine with your regular laundry detergent will freshen those stinky gym clothes right up. I recommend the antiseptic type that does not contain artificial colors.

4. Do you feel as though you have an endless pile of mismatched socks? I often wonder if the sock companies and washer/dryer companies are in cahoots. We have begun folding the tops of our sock together after we take them off. This keeps them together through the washing process and makes for fewer “mismatched mollies”, as my daughter likes to call them!

5. How many times have you dried your favorite wool sweater or other delicate items? To avoid drying your expensive items, keep a dry erase marker in your laundry room and simply write on the washer to remind yourself when you have items that can not go in the dryer. This will save you time and money.

6. Finally, create a schedule. This has helped me tremendously. I think it is important whether you do all of the laundry or share the responsibility with other members of your household. Pinterest has some amazing templates. Here are a couple of links:
