Twisted Pines Farm: Fresh, Local Food from Black Forest {Giveaway}

I do my best to feed my children well-balanced, nutritious meals, while also catering to their selective tastes.

This is basically a nice way of saying that I have picky eaters I have to appease.

Shooting for Healthy

While trying to find food that my whole family will enjoy, I shy away from items with high fructose corn syrup, added sugars, and myriad chemicals. And I typically opt for organic and grass-fed cuts of meat, if they are available. Overall, I assure myself that I am doing a fairly decent job in the meals that I select and the food that I purchase and I move on to the hundreds of other tasks that are on my mom to-do list.

I definitely don’t give any additional thought to my food purchases. I don’t take the time to discover where the beef for taco night actually comes from or what “grass-fed” on the label really means. And I know for a fact that I have never questioned how the meat is actually processed. In fact, I probably spend more time working on my family’s Christmas list and where to get the best deals on gifts than I spend researching the meat that I am feeding my family all year long.

But all of that is about to change.

Twisted Pines Farm: Fresh, Quality, Local Food

TwistedPinesFarm Two weeks ago, my family visited Twisted Pines Farm in Black Forest, Colorado. It was an eye-opening experience that has forever changed the way I select meat and eggs for my family.

Twisted Pines Farm is owned and operated by the husband and wife duo, Grant and Alison Goldberg. They opened their family farm in 2014 with a passion for providing the community with high quality, sustainably farmed, locally raised food.

Nestled in the heart of Black Forest, Twisted Pines Farm is home to chickens, turkeys, pigs and sometimes lambs. These well-cared-for animals roam various areas of the farm, eat off the land, are provided supplemental feed and never come in contact with antibiotics or chemicals. They receive plenty of fresh air and exercise, making them the true epitome of free-range and grass-fed.

Living Off the Land

Along with chicken, turkey and pork, Twisted Pines Farm also offers beef. Their cows roam acreage in Cherry Creek, Colorado. They eat native pasture and never receive hormones or antibiotics. The cows drink their water right from the creek on the property.

One of the highlights of my farm visit was hanging out with the pigs. At Twisted Pines Farm, these gentle animals move throughout the property weekly. Rooting up the ground is one of their favorite things to do and I witnessed a lot of it. Rooting not only keeps them happy, but it also helps the native grasses and plants to flourish. The rooting work that they do paves the way for new grasses and plants to grow, which will feed next year’s group of pigs. It is a beautiful cycle.

Along with the humane treatment of their animals, Twisted Pines Farm is also committed to safe processing practices. What happens at the processing plant is just as important as what happens on the farm. Twisted Pines Farm uses Royal Gorge Packing in Canon City for the processing of their beef and pork. A USDA plant in Fort Collins processes their chickens, while the turkeys are processed either on the farm or in Simla.

Feel Good About What You Eat

TwistedPinesFarm - Farm to forkPasture-raised meat is not only better for our bodies, but it tastes better too. I can attest to that. Twisted Pines Farm provided my family with a small sampler box of meats to try. I took home a whole chicken, ground beef, pork chops, breakfast sausage, summer sausage, and bacon.

I noticed the difference immediately.

The smell, appearance, and taste were much better than any meat that I have ever cooked. It was even better than the grass-fed beef and chicken that I purchase at my local grocery store. My entire family also noticed a difference. My kids loved the chicken, saying that it was the best that they ever had. And my husband (whose sensitive stomach is usually aggravated by pork) was able to fully enjoy the pork chops and sausage from Twisted Pines Farm.

We also received one dozen eggs from their group of layers. My family loves farm fresh eggs. I was surprised to learn that farm fresh eggs contain: 4 times the Vitamin D, 3 times the Vitamin E, 2 times the Omega-3s, 1/3 of the cholesterol and 1/4 less saturated fats than commercially produced eggs. Another difference that you can taste.

Education Matters

Educating the community is also a big mission of Twisted Pines Farm. Grant and Alison offer a variety of workshops at their farm including Meat Birds 101 and Chickens 101. They also love sharing more about what they do and are happy to make appointments for a farm tour. Seeing in person how the farm operates is a great first step in educating yourself about the food you consume. You can feel good about making a purchase from Twisted Pines Farm because there are no doubts about where your meat came from or how it was raised.

Whether you are looking to stock up on beef or serve a pasture-raised turkey this Thanksgiving, Twisted Pines Farm has you covered. The farm offers a variety of purchase options, from whole animals to sampler boxes. You are sure to find an option that works best for your family. Grant and Alison are delighted to answer any questions that you may have about pricing, cuts of meat, freezer space, recipes, etc. They understand that you may have a lot of questions, especially if you have never purchased meat in this way before. They will happily come alongside you every step of the way.

Do yourself and your family a favor and give Twisted Pines Farm a try.
