How to Beat the Fall Slump

0

Fall is my favorite time of year. I love the changing of the leaves, the cool breeze, and the smell of pumpkin spice and apple pie. You can often find me drinking a hot pumpkin spice latte by my fireplace and plotting our next pumpkin patch visit.

However, like many others, I struggle with seasonal depression. Especially here in Colorado, where the sun disappears behind the mountains much earlier than it does while living out on the plains (Kansas native here).

The days are short and the nights are long. I often want to snuggle up on the couch and only leave my house in cases of grocery shopping and daycare drop-offs. Dreamy, I know.

Over the years, I’ve realized that there are adjustments I can make to beat the seasonal sadness that comes with the changing seasons.

Here are a few tips that have helped me overcome the fall slump:

Get Outside

First off, go outside! Especially during the morning hours or over your lunch break. Soak up the sun as much as you can. This is known to boost your mood and also helps to “fill your cup” so that you can feel full of light for the rest of the day. I try my best to take a long walk early afternoon when the sun is the warmest.

Candles & Accent Lights

Not only do candles smell great, but they also help to brighten your home. During the holiday seasons, I love to add a string of warm white lights to my kitchen or living room to bring in extra lighting. They help to warm up the space and they are pretty to look at! You can always find twinkle lights and candles burning in my house!

Make Plans

Having plans to look forward to in the evening or for the weekend can help break you out of the slump of the weekly routine. Just because summer is over doesn’t mean your Tuesday coffee dates with your best friend have to end!

Let the Light In

If you’re used to leaving your blinds closed and curtains are drawn during the day, then start opening them! Letting the light into your home can make you feel more awake, more productive, and overall happier! The evening sun is actually my favorite because it helps to warm up my home before the sun sets.

Pick Up a Hobby

In the past few years, I’ve picked up different hobbies to keep my mind and hands busy during the cold seasons. One year, I decided to read a new book every week. Last year, I got a Cricut that occupied my time (and my sanity).

The changing seasons are beautiful, but they can be hard for some of us. Find ways to change up your routine and figure out what brings you happiness to beat the fall slump!
