It is almost Christmas Tree time, and let me be the first to urge you to choose a real Christmas Tree this year. 2020 has forced so many changes. While many of them have been tough, some have also been a silver lining. Our family has loved the slower pace. I truly hope as we head into Christmas, we have more time for making memories, too.

The Best Memories

I’m not big on many family traditions. But since I first married, I have been adamant about having a real Christmas Tree. I have many reasons for this, but the absolute most important reason is to create family memories for my kids. After year one of having a real tree, I knew this would be a tradition I want to pass on to my kids and grandkids.

We are going on 11 years of having real Christmas Trees. We have turned our tree hunting day into a true adventure. Before we venture our, we meet friends for breakfast tacos. My boys are now old enough to be in charge of packing up everything we need to cut and haul a tree home. They LOVE it. We bundle up and pack snacks and hot cocoa for our drive. We get a large tree for our family room and let the boys pick out a small tree for their own area. Everyone in our family knows that we document the day with pictures (I let the boys snap them!) and videos (my husband is the expert).

If you are looking to make amazing memories at the end of a really challenging year, there is no better family activity to kick off Christmas!

christmas treeAn Excellent Choice for the Environment

Coloradans are known to be outdoorsy, and there isn’t a better way to love the environment. Real Christmas trees come from the earth and return to the earth. They are biodegradable, so they can be recycled or reused for mulch and for every tree harvested, a new one is planted. The wonderful smell of a freshly cut tree will fill your home. I love bringing the outside in to make my home feel cozy for the winter season.

We have chosen different types of trees over the years. Short, fat, long-needle trees. Tall, slender, short-needle trees. I love bringing the tree home and embarking on the challenge to string lights and make the current year’s version of our tree the best yet.

christmas treeSupport Local

Our family has focused on supporting local and giving back to our community this year. Buying a real Christmas tree is a way to support farmers. It also supports local businesses, organizations, and their workers who may have suffered during the pandemic. Supporting local this Christmas is a wonderful gift.

Tonya
Tonya grew up in Iowa and attended the University of Northern Iowa, where she majored in Health Promotion (the degree you choose when you know are meant to make an impact but you don’t know exactly how) After graduating in 2003, her adventurous spirit lead her to pack up her little car and move to Colorado Springs. Her heart was easily won by the beautiful landscape, the amazing weather, colorful Aspen trees, and the fabulous people in this city. In 2008, she married her love and best friend, Ryan. They added two amazing boys to the family…Landon (2009) and Kellan (2011). After a rewarding career as a Director for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and a sales representative for Pfizer, her heart desired more time with her boys. In 2011, she became a work from home mom, focusing on her very busy boys full time and her health and wellness coaching business part time! Her passion as a mom includes building legos, trips to the zoo, family hikes, fishing, and camping. Her passion as a health coach is helping people see their potential, reach goals, and lead a healthy lifestyle. In her spare time (what is that again??), she loves working out, running, and reading. Her favorite things to do with her handsome hubby include riding bikes downtown Colorado Springs for date nights, hiking the incline, trying new (exotic) foods, spending time with great (adult) friends, and trying craft beers (inspired of course by her husband!).
