We grew up in the Midwest. Snow days were often and consistent. They were also bitter cold, so even playing in the snow was a short-lived activity. It seemed when we had one snow day, we were bound to have several in a row. Growing up in a family of 5 kids also meant there were a lot of bodies at home on snow days, and we needed things to do!

The Best Memories

One of my all-time favorite memories on a snow day was making snow ice cream every time we would get several inches of fresh powder. It was a super simple recipe, was quick to throw together, and the ice cream was the most delicious treat. I even remember as I got older, my mom would let me lead the charge with my 4 younger siblings since the recipe was so easy. We had a blast every single time!

Snow Day Fun

Obviously, the key to this recipe is fresh, WHITE snow! The best time to make snow ice cream is immediately after a very heavy snowfall. I suggest taking fresh snow from a patio, porch or deck if possible (fewer animals are likely to make their way through…). Involve the kids and make it fun!

Snow Ice Cream Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 8 cups of fresh white snow
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • a pinch salt

DIRECTIONS

  • In a large bowl, combine all ingredients except for the snow and whisk them together. Gather up the snow and add to the bowl, stirring consistently.
  • Enjoy immediately! (You can also freeze for later, but it is best enjoyed right away!)

A Few Variations

If you are looking to add some flavor, here are a few ideas (but keep in mind I have not tried them):

  • Try using Chocolate Milk or Egg Nog instead of plain milk!
  • Add cinnamon or vanilla bean to the mixture
  • Mix in fresh or frozen fruits

Also, feel free to take this activity up a few notches by setting up a Snow Ice Cream Sundae Bar! The toppings are endless, but sprinkles, chopped candy, whipped cream, and chocolate fudge are always favorites at our house!

Share your favorite toppings or the fun you have when you make snow ice cream with your family!

Tonya
Tonya grew up in Iowa and attended the University of Northern Iowa, where she majored in Health Promotion (the degree you choose when you know are meant to make an impact but you don’t know exactly how) After graduating in 2003, her adventurous spirit lead her to pack up her little car and move to Colorado Springs. Her heart was easily won by the beautiful landscape, the amazing weather, colorful Aspen trees, and the fabulous people in this city. In 2008, she married her love and best friend, Ryan. They added two amazing boys to the family…Landon (2009) and Kellan (2011). After a rewarding career as a Director for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and a sales representative for Pfizer, her heart desired more time with her boys. In 2011, she became a work from home mom, focusing on her very busy boys full time and her health and wellness coaching business part time! Her passion as a mom includes building legos, trips to the zoo, family hikes, fishing, and camping. Her passion as a health coach is helping people see their potential, reach goals, and lead a healthy lifestyle. In her spare time (what is that again??), she loves working out, running, and reading. Her favorite things to do with her handsome hubby include riding bikes downtown Colorado Springs for date nights, hiking the incline, trying new (exotic) foods, spending time with great (adult) friends, and trying craft beers (inspired of course by her husband!).
