COSMB Cares: Resources for Military Families and Veterans

0

Colorado Springs is home to a total of five military installations: the United States Air Force Academy, Peterson Air Force Base, Ft. Carson Army Base, Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station and Schriever Air Force Base. With so many bases, military families and veterans move in and out of our city all the time.

Colorado Springs Moms Blog is proud to offer help and support to our many military families and veterans.

In fact, several of our writers have landed in Colorado Springs because of their time serving as military families. We’ve put together this guide of programs that serve military families and veterans in the Colorado Springs area. Please share it with anyone who could use support or encouragement.

Colorado Springs Resources

Here are a few local organizations that work hard to provide military families and veterans with the services they need.

The Home Front Cares

According to Audra Mincey, the Marketing and Communication Director for the organization, “The Home Front Cares provides an emergency financial bridge and responsive support to Colorado’s military members, veterans and families. We assist with rent, utilities, and car repairs during times of need and transition. The Home Front Cares has been helping Colorado’s military and veteran families for 15 years now and was founded by two retired Air Force colonels. We pride ourselves on being an organization that our local families can count on when assistance is needed.”

Colorado Veterans Project

The Colorado Veterans Program’s main focus is on raising funds and awareness for veterans, but their website offers a good list of resources for veterans and their families. There you will find everything from immediate assistance resources to links for adaptive sports and educational programs.

School Districts

Colorado Springs school districts sometimes employ military transition consultants on their full-time staff. Even if your chosen district doesn’t have a dedicated specialist, the districts and staff are well versed in the frequent transitions and needs of the military community and it is worth making a phone call to the district office or stopping by.

Peak Military Care Network

When asked about their services for military families and veterans, Community Outreach Coordinator Amanda Nurmi said, “Peak Military Care Network (PMCN) is a local nonprofit that connects service members (active duty, Guard and Reserve), veterans and their families to the highest quality resources provided by our trusted community partners. PMCN has 44 (to-date) partner agencies, including financial and benefits assistance, behavioral health, child care, education, spouse employment, transportation and more. PMCN provides call-in, web-based and walk-in assistance, whether someone is in crisis, looking for housing and employment, or the individual has a question about where to turn to in the community for information or support.”

Colorado Springs Moms Blog cares deeply about our community. To that end, we are running monthly series called "COSMB Cares." In these posts, we will highlight a national or international cause and one or more of the local organizations working to improve that situation. This seventh installment of "COSMB Cares" highlights local resources that help our many military families and veterans.
