We live in a pretty unique place. Colorado Springs is the hub for a handful of military bases and one of the most beautiful places on earth. That means this city draws people — and food — from around the world. During this quarantine, my family has been looking for ways to support local businesses. I happen to be a food tour leader and self-proclaimed foodie on the side, so we have allotted as much as we can to supporting restaurants that make our city so unique.

Did you know that smack-dab in the middle of the United States, we have a smorgasbord that could essentially take you on a food tour around the world?

Here are a few of my foodie family’s favorites, just around the corner:

Jamaican: Spice Island Grill

  • Jerk Pork – seasoned with a blend of authentic Jamaican spices, and then grilled or Oxtail Stew

Mexican: El Taco Rey

  • Avocado Pork Smothered Green Chile Burrito

Cambodian: Donuts and Noodles

  • Pho Ga – Flu killer (Extra Ginger and Pepper Corn)

Indian: Urban Tandoor

  • Butter Chicken, Naan, Gulab Jamun with Ice Cream, Peshawari Naan

German: Uwe’s German Restaurant

  • Wiener Schnitzel – Veal cutlet with Fried Potatoes and Vegetables
  • Sauerbraten – Bavarian-style marinated Beef in sweet-sour Sauce, served with Red Cabbage and Potato-Dumplings

Japanese: Rooster’s House of Ramen

  • Beef Birria Ramen – Chili & Tomato Braised Beef, Beef Consomme, Cilantro Lime Onions, Radish, Lime, Queso Fresco, Cilantro

Greek: Jake and Telly’s

  • Avgolémono (Greek Lemon Chicken Soup) and Elliniká Saláta (Greek Salad)

Middle Eastern: Heart of Jerusalem

  • Tabouleh Salad, Falafel, Baba Ghanoush Dip, Shawarma (gyro) beef and lamb plate

Pub: Jack Quinn’s or Alchemy

  • Irish Soda Bread, Fish & Chips, Bangers & Mash, Corned Beef & Cabbage

Travel might be out for the summer, but adventure doesn’t have to be.

We live in such a unique area that you can experience things nearby that give you a taste of the world without the price tag. For our family, it has been fun to take a region of the world and learn a little more about it. Maybe it is sampling food, cooking food, growing something native to that area and learning more about the overall area that you might want to know more about. We have quite the variety of options here in the Springs, and for that we are grateful!

What are your favorite local restaurants?

Rochelle
Rochelle is a desert-rat from Arizona who kept moving north until she hit Colorado Springs; good luck getting her to leave now. She wasted no time snagging her husband under the pretense of athleticism and outdoorsy-ness. Among other things, eleven years of marriage has yielded two beautiful daughters, Harper and Quinn. Momming these super-sassy littles is her biggest adventure yet, and provides for some serious writing material. Rochelle works out of the home also, and has a diverse background in public relations, social work, student advising, youth ministry and pyrotechnics. She is presently finishing up her MBA and is juggling all of it fairly well for a person with little to no hand-eye-coordination. She is a firm believer that it takes a village to raise a child and she is beyond grateful for hers.
