Ladies, let’s get real. No holds, real. It’s winter. It’ really, really cold! And I only have the option of long pants to keep warm. Which, in my mind, means it’s the time of year I have a decision to make: To shave or not to shave?

Easy answer, right? Stop shaving my legs.

Can I get a hallelujah? Girl, you know you have thought this too.

Good-bye razors!

No more yoga moves in the shower!

See ya later razor burn and painful cuts!

There are thermal advantages to NOT shaving my legs, after all. I was completely content with throwing my shaving regiment out the window for a season — all in the name of comfort.

But Wait!

A little situation came up that made me stop in my tracks and think twice about my hairy compromise! Although I am quite comfortable embracing a more relaxed view of shaving, my sweet husband is the one who ultimately suffers the hairy consequences.

You see, right at the beginning of my shaving strike, I had made an appointment to have a tattoo on my foot touched up. The fact that someone would be inches from my feet and legs made me go into overtime shaving my legs and using a pumice stone to make my feet acceptable.

I was so concerned about how I would be perceived by the man who would touch up my tattoo that I made it a priority to up my hygiene game. And right in the middle of this, I felt a sudden sting of guilt! I was concerning myself with “impressing” this man so much, yet didn’t give a thought about not shaving in winter for my husband.

Presenting My Best Self

I have put so much concern into preparing myself for a tattoo.

But that wasn’t all.  I have also made sure I was at my best for other people, too:

  • I have shaved my legs in preparation for a pedicure. How could I expect the employee to massage my hairy legs?
  • Don’t even get me started about prepping for a gynecologist appointment.

But have I been concerned about presenting my best self for my husband??

I wouldn’t have been caught dead with hairy legs when I was first married! I put a lot of thought into my body and how I took care of it.  But after 15 years of marriage, things get comfortable and predictable and sometimes, we don’t put as much care into things.

No married couple starts out with the hope they will eventually just feel like roommates.  They do not hope one day the romance and passion will be gone. They do not want a lack of intimacy. Yet, when we allow ourselves to make other people’s opinions of ourselves more important than our spouse’s, we walk a tightrope of compromise.  I cannot shave my legs for others if I do not make it a priority for my spouse!

Let’s Shave

Ok! So shaving can really be a pain!

Something we start and right in the middle of it want to quit! But I am making a commitment to put my husband first. If I can take the time and concern to present myself to a tattoo artist, pedicurist or gynecologist in the best possible way, I certainly can put thought and time into making the best me for my husband.

Let’s keep the passion and intrigue alive in our marriages by prioritizing our spouses. Girl, let’s keep shaving this winter and let our spouses know it’s all in the name of LOVE!
