Hello Colorado Springs Moms! My name is Melisa (pronounced muh-leesa) and I’m excited to be a new voice around here at COSMC!
I am raising four beautiful souls at home (Stella, Judah, Naomi, & Natalie) and I eagerly await being with my three other heavenly babies someday! I have been married for ten years to Troy, who is so much better than anything I could have wished for. For the last 10 years, I have been a stay-at-home mama. While it’s the greatest work of my life, it’s sometimes tough.
Before I started my career as a mother, I worked professionally as a community programs organizer, dance and arts director and educator at an art museum. I was born and raised in the beautiful Pacific Northwest and have and traveled globally. South Africa captured my heart forever.
Colorado Springs became home in 2016 when my husband accepted a job here and we took a leap of faith as we left family and amazing community to put down roots here. This new and beautiful town accepted and included me immediately. I actually spent a lot of time looking to this community as I settled into my new mom life.
Having the opportunity to live in and visit so many of the beautiful places around the world, I consider it an incredible opportunity to have Colorado Springs be yet another gorgeous place to dwell. Our family absolutely loves the stunning blue skies, colorful mountains, and for sure the glorious amount of sunshine! Exploring our lovely town is one of my favorite things to do and it seems the discoveries are endless around here. It took some time to get used to the lack of green from the PNW (and not seeing the water every day). But I’ve finally bought my first CO tee shirt and call Colorado home!
I didn’t think too much about being a mom before I became one. Actually, I remember before I married I thought I didn’t even know if I liked kids. Boy was I wrong! I discovered from volunteering at my church youth group that I loved leading and nurturing kids. I just hadn’t had much exposure to them throughout my life. I’m so glad for that realization because I absolutely love being a mom and being around my sweet little ones.
I’m excited to be a part of this community, as I love talking all things surrounding being a mama. More than talking motherhood, I love encouraging other moms and being a cheerleader on your team! Being a mom can be one of the greatest and hardest things, and all in the same moment. We have spent the last four years exploring the world of homeschooling. Our family has tried private school, public school and charter school. We finally landed with homeschooling and it’s been a fantastic fit for us! I go to bed most days completely full, and exhausted!
If I could sit down and have kombucha with you, you’d quickly find out that I’m passionate about honest motherhood, admitting that I don’t have it figured out and need God and my community to stay strong in this game. My children are such a gift and teach me more than I could’ve ever imagined. I mean, I honestly thought I wasn’t selfish before becoming a mom — ha! Motherhood has brought about my darkest moments and allowed me to receive the brightest gifts of grace, unconditional love, and trust.
Writing in this Space
A journalism major in college propelled my love to write and design over the years. I want to use my words to influence and speak truth. I love to write, but have rarely found the time in the last decade to actually sit down and put pen to paper, which is my favorite medium for creativity. One of my passions is gathering women and creating space to refresh hearts and renew minds. As I’ve spent time praying and thinking this year about how to love my community of women I realized that it was probably time to start putting my words online.
It is my joy and honor to be among all of you moms who are doing the brave and significant work of raising children! You can connect with me on Instagram (@madebymelisa) to get a glimpse into my thoughts on life.
