Parenting is exhausting. We are constantly shuttling our kids around to activities, camps, and events. Sometimes we set aside time for a date night, but it usually requires some planning which can also feel like a chore. It’s easy to get bogged down in our kids lives and forget about our own. I can say for certain that I, too, enjoy doing fun things. Participating in a planned activity sounds fabulous. I’m not talking about planning it yourself, but rather showing up and having a good time.

Unexpected Enjoyment

A couple of years ago, my husband asked if I wanted to go to trivia. He had been invited by some friends and figured it may be something I would like. After just one night, I was hooked! There are so many different trivia events that take place around our city. You can find them at different locations every single night. Any we have done have been free to join. Most places even award prizes for the top three teams.

The expectation of the host location is generally that this fun event will draw a crowd on slow nights. They figure that people will usually spend some money on food or drinks while they are playing which is why it is offered for free. We now have a team and try to go at least once a week (although sometimes our kids’ fun gets in the way of ours). Our favorite is Geeks Who Drink Trivia. You need not be a geek or drinker to participate.

Another fun free thing for us moms to do is to go on a hike. There are several groups in Colorado Springs dedicated to bringing people together in the outdoors. Facebook has a group called Colorado Springs Lady Hikers where women post planned hikes and set a meeting time. There are generally groups meeting daily all at different times and locations. Anyone is welcome to set up a hike of their own. The women typically state something about themselves like if they have kids, pets, or other proclivities, as well as their ability level. All you have to do is show up and enjoy yourself.

Always Say Yes

One of my mottos that I’ve developed over time is always say yes. Always say yes to an invitation extended to do an activity. I’m not talking about saying yes to any and all favors that may come your way. We all get tired and would rather sit at home sometimes. That’s okay. Taking time to relax is essential. However, putting yourself out there even when you may not want to can yield some huge benefits. Having fun can come from unexpected places like meeting new people, discovering a new talent, or having a meaningful conversation. It’s always easy to find an excuse. Growth and excitement never come from taking the easy way out.

Find the Fun

Our kids benefit from seeing us be happy. They get enjoyment from knowing that moms can have fun, too. We all know that we need time to ourselves. A spa day is nice, but not always practical. Being able to have our house to ourselves is a dream but not always a reality. The beauty of fun is that it can be found in so many places, if you just know where to look. Opening yourself up to new possibilities may be just what you need. After a year that has been less than enjoyable, it’s time for us moms to find our fun again.
