Ok, I’ll Admit It… I Love to Color

I truly enjoy crafting, everything from crocheting to counted cross stitch to calligraphy. But I have a secret and it is time to come clean. Over the past few years it has finally become socially acceptable, so I am going to be brave and admit it. I am an adult and I LOVE to color.

I’ll Repeat: I LOVE To Color

I have my own set of brush markers, colored pencils and even crayons (the biggest box they make). I love abstract pictures to color or mandalas or flowers. Nothing too juvenile. But for a long time, I couldn’t tell anyone that I love to color more than my child does.

Until… good news!

Adult coloring books became a thing. They have been proven to help people with anxiety calm down and improve focus. For those of us who get stressed at the mere idea of meditation, this is a good alternative. I know for myself it is incredibly soothing. I loved to color as a child and experiment with shading and colors and such but felt that I had to put it away when I grew up.

I remember mentioning to my mother one day that I had found a huge set of markers that had a fine tip point on one side and a brush tip (like a paint brush) on the other. “What are you going to do with those? I think Sammy (my then-four-year-old son) is too young to handle those.” When I sheepishly told her I wanted them for me, she just gave me a strange look and said that she would have thought I had outgrown that sort of thing.

Coloring Is Cool

Now, there are adult coloring books everywhere in almost any type you might like. There are groups devoted to it on Facebook for trading ideas or resources or even coloring pages. You can even find blank pages on Pinterest and Etsy. For the more creative, there are stencils you can get to create your own coloring page.

For me there is nothing better than binge watching a favorite show on Netflix with a hot cup of tea and my coloring pages and colors.

It is very relaxing to play with the colors and shading. There is something peaceful about a task where the biggest decision to make is what to color next and what color to make it. And if it turns out terribly because some colors just were not meant to go together, no big deal. Move on to the next coloring page.

Do you color? What is your favorite type of picture and tool to use?

Becky
Becky is a Colorado native who lives on the east side of the Springs with her 4 year old son Sam, her husband Matt, and 3 dogs and 1 cat. She has been married for 15 years. She has worked in healthcare management for her entire working life and transitioned to working for herself from her home office 4 years ago. She is grateful for the flexibility that self-employment offers but still wishes for more hours in a day to get everything done. Becky has trouble saying no and loves to be involved with a cause or a purpose. If you need someone for a committee or to get things done, she is your girl. She still makes the time to be there for friends and family. When she is not caught up in the busy-ness of her life, she loves to cook, bake, read, craft, watch movies and, of course, write. She is obsessed with cooking shows and loves to try new recipes. Her husband is her willing guinea pig for her creations.
