Snail Mail Pen Pals

1

Pen PalsI have always loved to get letters. When I was 12 or 13, I joined a pen pal group and had 3 pen pals until we all graduated high school. I remember the joy of getting mail and having friends from different parts of the country and even a different part of the world (one of my penpals lived in New South Wales, Australia). We lost touch, but I still remember it fondly.

In this technology age, the idea of putting pen to paper seems almost foreign. Frankly, I didn’t really think there still would be much interest in traditional pen pals. But I have always loved the feel of a clean sheet of paper and enjoyed the sound of a pen scratching along as the words flow.

Pen Pal Sites

Imagine my surprise in finding numerous Facebook pages and websites that will help match you up with snail mail pen pals. Finally, I found a use for all of those fountain pens and fun little notecards that I can never resist!

You will find a wide variety of correspondents to choose from. When I was initially looking into this, I was worried that I would have nothing in common with anyone. But much to my surprise, I found several ladies that had similar interests or interests that I was intrigued by.

Some people are just as interested in an email penpal situation which is great, too. Simply join a page, enter a short bio and away you go. For example, you can name your age, interests, hobbies, pets, etc., but you certainly don’t have to limit yourself to people that are like you. Maybe it would be fun to correspond with someone that lives in a place you have always wanted to learn about. Or maybe they have a hobby that you would love to learn more about. These are great conversation starters. There are people from every country that are interested in making this kind of connection. I have even found a couple of pen pals that only live a few miles from me.

Joy at the Mailbox

I started writing last year and as with anything, sometimes I didn’t get a response. Other times there was a reply but just not a connection which is fine with me. At least maybe my letter brought a smile to someone even if it doesn’t become a long-term thing. But I have found a few people that I truly enjoy writing to. We share thoughts, funny anecdotes and personal accomplishments.

I love the anticipation of seeing “happy” mail in my mailbox. Such a nice change from all the junk mail, bills or even just an empty mailbox. In a world where there are innumerable ways to connect people let’s not overlook the most basic forms of interaction.

She has worked in healthcare management for her entire working life and transitioned to working for herself from her home office 4 years ago. She is grateful for the flexibility that self-employment offers but still wishes for more hours in a day to get everything done. Becky has trouble saying no and loves to be involved with a cause or a purpose. If you need someone for a committee or to get things done, she is your girl. She still makes the time to be there for friends and family. When she is not caught up in the busy-ness of her life, she loves to cook, bake, read, craft, watch movies and, of course, write. She is obsessed with cooking shows and loves to try new recipes. Her husband is her willing guinea pig for her creations.

  1. I love that you wrote about this. I have penpals from 5 different countries, and they have been my friends for over a decade. I’ve never met any of them in person, but we have a deep writing bond. Interpals website is where I found these gems. It’s like a Facebook, but primarily for pen pals. I collect postcards, and that’s how my penpals and I communicate. That might be a fun website for you to examine. Loved this post.
